WaiOra Beach Retreat

The Dream

Has been in the making since Vicky first arrived to live on Aotea, Great Barrier Island in 1987. This magical island has provided sustenance, rest and a place for healing since the arrival of the first Maori waka/canoes in the 1300's and then Pakeha from the 1700's. Aotea lies approx. 90 kms N.E of Auckland at the outer edge of the Hauraki Gulf, and is accessible by scheduled daily flights and a regular car ferry service, which also provide the locals with freight. This is a place where one lives daily with all the elements and Mother Nature in all her glory, and is the perfect 'get-away holiday destination'  - right on the doorstep of one of the world's most liveable cities.

The House

This spacious 2 bed-room eco-retreat and family home has been purpose-designed for a beachfront lifestyle with outdoor living in mind. There are internal and external hot water showers, a full off-grid system powered by solar panels and a back-up generator which supply both home and garden chalets with electricity.

The house has a low-energy electric fridge plus gas cooking, solar/gas hot water and a cosy woodfire
for those cooler nights, which provide the necessities for year-round comfortable living.

The house is graced with a large covered front deck for relaxing and dining, and a sunny back deck flowing

into the garden. Our garden has mature fruit trees and is well stocked with herbs and vegetables.

Water-based and eco paint products have been used caringly throughout the house.

"I often work on Great Barrier but this was the first time I have used Airbnb. What a great choice. Vicky made me feel very welcome and nothing was a problem. Even though I was working, I returned home feeling as if I had returned from holiday. Great Barrier is so stress free and the people so friendly it makes you want to stay there forever. Thanks Vicky :)"
